walking in the rain

It's a rainy morning...not a gutter washing rain but a gentle pitter-patter rain.  It's the kind of rain that combines with the low overhead of cloud to make the world feel smaller and closer and our thoughts come in out of the rain to look inward.  Even at the pond there is a stillness as nature pauses to listen to the gentle music of raindrops glancing off the branches of trees and landing with small splashes on the forest floor and pond surface.  Two gray heron seem undisturbed as they squawk to each other and fly to a new fishing location.  It seems a good morning to think about the words of the Apostle Paul from Philippians, chapter 4: 8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

It's easy to think about the other things that drag us down but how good it is to consider all that is right about life as we walk in alignment...and realignment...with the Lord.  We were talking about the holiness of God in our small group last night and it struck me that we cry out for "truth" and "absolute right" and "purity".  Something inside wants to know if there is anything that we can give ourselves to that is trustworthy.  The holy God who has made us and rescued us can be absolutely relied on to meet every need we have.  We need a holy God to be made whole and to live for wholeheartedly.  ...interesting how the rain can clear your head!
