Subject: the good competition

Romans 12:10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.
-
We were built to love each other.  The twelfth chapter of Romans discusses the design God used to give each of us different gifts so that we could give them to others...spiritual gifts and gifts of service.  When we get outside of ourselves and help others we are putting His design into motion.  Paul exhorts the reader to "not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord" and puts that command inside lots of direction about helping others.  Here are some of the ways he lists to help  others:
"Contribute to the needs of the saints"
"seek to show hospitality"
"Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them"
"Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep"
"Live in harmony with one another"
"Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly"
"Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all"
"so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all"
"never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God"
"If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head"
"Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good"
-
The Lord has loved us with an unusual love that goes out of its way and calls us to the same.  This is the competition worth giving ourselves to.
-
blessings,
Rob Smith
